Psalm 119 is filled with some extremely powerful prayers and spiritual insights. Here is an example of one that we recently prayed over in the prayer room:

May your unfailing love come to me, O Lord,
   Your salvation according to your promise;
Then I will answer the one who taunts me, for I trust in Your Word. (v. 41-42)

The reality of life is that we all face pressure and stressful situations and circumstances. Hardly a week goes by when something...

On Sunday morning I received word from a friend that a terrorist group called ‘Al-Shabaab’ had posted an online video calling for violent attacks on a variety of shopping centers around the world, including here in Edmonton, at West Edmonton Mall.

My initial response was surprise that Edmonton had been specifically named, however as I thought more about it, I understood that WEM is an internationally known shopping mall, similar to the Mall of America and others. I shared the information about the video with several people within HoPE and also with several pastors in the city,...

This past weekend many in the world were shocked yet again by the release of a video tape by the Islamic terrorist group ISIS, recording the beheading of 21 Coptic Christians
in Libya. When I heard the news and saw a few of the images of fellow Christian believers about to be executed, I was stunned. To be honest, the event has left a deep impact on me and I have found my self thinking about it fairly continually for the past several days.

As you would expect, there have been all kinds of responses to this horrific event. Government leaders across the world denounced it and...

This week I have been really stirred by Psalm 8:1-2

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

God has chosen that His strength will be displayed through our weakness, when we engage in praise. Literally, the passage says ‘you have ordained strength’, but we know it is referring to ‘praise’ because Jesus quoted this verse when the...

This week in the morning prayer meetings, we are focused on praying from 1 Thessalonians 1 in our times of devotional prayer. Today I was struck by Paul’s reference to “endurance inspired by hope” (v. 3). I reflected on this verse in the context of prayer and fact that we need hope in order to experience endurance in prayer. I think many of us know what it’s like to get pumped up about praying and wanting to really strengthen our prayer lives, but then after the initial excitement wears off we find ourselves struggling with the rhythms of normal life; or sometimes we fail to see the impact...

Last week in the prayer room one of the ‘devotional prayer’ passages that we looked at was Luke 2, and the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. One verse in that chapter always stands out to me:

“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19)

Like most people, I find Christmas to be a season of tremendous busyness and many times I have struggled to truly connect with Jesus in the midst of it all. In Luke 2 we read that Mary was able to ‘treasure’ and ‘ponder’ at the amazing things that...

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is coming so quickly! We are now in the season that the Church calls ‘Advent’. Many of us associate Advent as being the weeks leading up to Christmas where we sing Christmas carols and when a special candle gets lit each week in Church.

I find Advent to be a very significant time of year, so let me share a couple of things that hopefully will increase its significance for you as well.

The term ‘advent’ comes from the Latin word adventus, which means ‘coming’. As Christians, we celebrate the first advent of Jesus,...

This week I had a great opportunity to speak at the weekly staff meeting at Hope Mission, which is a truly amazing ministry that serves the inner-city community and many others in the capital region.

I shared from Daniel 9-10, where Daniel has been spending time in prayer and fasting and then has some incredible visitations from the angel Gabriel.

Daniel, I have now come to give you insight and understanding. As soon as you began to pray, an answer was given, which I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed. -Dan. 9:22-23...

This week in the prayer room we chose Hebrews 12 as one of the passages that we will use for devotional prayer. This familiar passage is one that all of us can relate to:

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith. For the joy that was set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right...

Last week we began to look at an amazing time in the history of the Church in Edmonton. In ‘The Story of Glimpse of Glory – Pt. I’, we looked at the initial years of a worship ministry that God used to impact local churches in the area of worship throughout the capital region. Here’s a short recap of ‘Part I’ and more of the story of Glimpse.

In 1983, a handful of young adults at Central Baptist Church began to meet after the evening service for a time of...
